ZhenZhenZhong lives and works in Los Angeles and Guangzhou. Zhong’s practice involves what she terms “non-human performers”: kinetic machines assembled by hand from electronics and found materials. Her installations combine video, light, custom electronics, and sound, with machines carrying out repetitive, task-like gestures that recall forms of labor once assigned to human bodies, but increasingly automated. Informed by more than a decade of work in theater, Zhong composes semi-fictional worlds that draw on news, folklore, and personal history, and address the relationship between the body, labor, and technology.

She studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and received an MFA in Art and Technology / Costume Design from California Institute of the Arts.


She was a member of Project Cosmic Archlight. She had her double-person show Embodied Measurement at Double Double Gallery this year. Her latest work Women at Work was shown at UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles. She has recently been a member of the Goethe Institute fellowship program AI to Amplify. She participated in the 2021 Huayu Youth Art Award(Sanya, China) as a member of the "44 Monthly” artist collective. Her project Built at Sea was selected and exhibited at Power Station of Arts in Shanghai.
